ABOUT US

sunrisekarate dojo.jpg

Our philosophy is simple — to provide a safe and supportive environment for students to practice and develop their martial art.

Located at 115-08 Lefferts Boulevard at the corner of Rockaway Blvd. Sunrise Karate has been proudly serving the South Ozone Park and Jamaica area in Queens NYC for over twenty years at the same location (click here for directions). We teach traditional Japanese Shotokan karate to students as young as three, as well as students with decades of training.  The dojo is open six days a week.  Classes in all experience levels are available Monday through Saturday.

We practice traditional Shotokan Karate as practiced at Kenkojuku Worldwide Headquarters in Hachioji, Tokyo Japan.  Our classes typically involve some warm-ups, stretching, calisthenics, basics (kihon), forms (kata), and sparring (kumite) — see Photos.  The focus is on developing techniques common to most martial arts, including striking, take-downs, and some grappling.  Sunrise Karate is always accepting new students.  We try our best to accommodate families with multiple children. We always respect and appreciate our senior students, juniors, and most of all, our beginners.

Karate offers something for everybody.

Reviews for Sunrise Karate

I've known Sensei Weber for nearly a decade and his approach to teaching is very thorough and personal.  He is very knowledgeable and his goal is to share all of his knowledge with his students.  This dojo is not some run-of-the-mill belt factory, but rather a space dedicated to all things positive about martial arts and physical fitness.  The environment is friendly, welcoming, and not at all intimidating.  I highly recommend Sunrise Karate for students of all ages and levels, it really is a stand-out environment where students thrive.

I am a long time friend of Sensei Rojas, he has been a mentor and example to me since the 80's. In 2013 I was able to meet Sensei Weber and take his classes I was impressed with his knowledge and his command over this great art form we call Karate-Do
